Everyone can learn a bit or two from the story of Clyde Fernandes. This local Mumbai boy, 21, is a versatile defender who made his debut for the Mumbai senior team during last season’s Hero I League against Shillong Lajong on 11th January 2016. He spent 4 years with the junior teams and a year with the senior squad before finally getting his big chance to play in the I League. He has also represented India in the Under 16 age category.

Amchi Mumbai’s Media team sat down with him for a talk about his journey with football. Here below are the key excerpts –

On his Career so far…

Clyde’s elder brother, Clayton played a huge role in shaping his career as a footballer. “My brother has supported me a lot throughout. He himself was a striker for Thakur College but had to quit due to family pressure. But he made sure the same didn’t happen to me and has been the man behind my success.”

On his Playing Position…

“I am an outright defender. But I can play on either side as a full back and as a centre back as well.” Well who doesn’t want a player like him in his team which can fulfil any defensive responsibility? Being both footed, it helps him in taking up the left back role with just as much ease as the right back role. No doubt about his versatility as a player.

Update on his fitness levels…

“There was a slight pain in the back of the left kneewhich is absolutely fine now and it’s no more troubling me.” He missed out on travelling to Chennai for the away fixture against Chennai City FC. The fit again defender found himself back in the squad for the crucial home game of Mohun Bagan.

On the Mohun Bagan game…

“In spite of unfavourable results in few previous games, we played this crucial game with a positive mind set and gave our 100% on the field. That showed during the game. It was unfortunate that we didn’t get all 3 points but we deserved to win.”

On his India U16 days…

“Representing your country is probably the dream of every footballer. I was part of the U16 National squad which travelled to South Africa in for Coca Cola International 2010 Football Camp. We registered a 13-1 win against Egypt. We also watched FIFA World Cup matches live in the stadium. This is my best football memory so far as watching international football legends play in front of your eyes was a surreal experience.” Being a part of the Indian National Senior Team is his biggest dream and we have no doubt on this talented defender to make it there.

On his Favourite Player…

“As a defender I like Sergio Ramos very much. He is rock solid at the back plus contributes with crucial goals whenever required. Cristiano Ronaldo is my all-time favourite footballer.” No prizes for guessing that he supports Real Madrid in UEFA competitions and Spanish La Liga.

“Steven Dias is one player whom I always look up to. I am lucky to share the dressing room with him as he always helps the youngsters and groom us to become better players and individuals.”

On Mumbai FC’s fan base…

“Yellow Brigade is a great support. They always turn up in huge numbers and get behind the players and the team. Crowd support is very important and fans chanting your name throughout bring out your best on the field.”

On the upcoming BFC game & the season ahead…

“Every game is important now, going forward we will take each game as a must win. The manager has full faith and has asked us to approach one game at a time. We need to give it all from the start of the whistle till the end.” Well we can expect one hell of a game tomorrow at Cooperage.

Clyde Fernandes lives in Malad with his family. He studied at Thakur College of Science & Commerce.

Clyde wears number 27 for Amchi Mumbai. He started 9 games in I League last season when he was only 20. This season he is right there in the squad for almost every game.
